Goji

Goji refers to the berry of the shrub Lycium barbarum, native to Tibet and China, where it is a Chinese herb known as Guo Qi Zi. According to Chinese government records a Chinese herbalist called Professor Li was able to live for 256 years and died in 1917. He attributed this achievement to various factors which included not getting stressed about anything since age 40, sleeping soundly and eating goji berries.

Another Herb mentioned by Professor is He Shou Wu, which translates as Mr Black Hair and also Ren Shen (ginseng). Not everyone is swayed by the numerous stories in the Chinese tradition of course. As an observer I find it interesting (for example) that ginseng is supposed to be an anti aging medicine. Scientific studies have shown that ginseng can convert more DHEA to the sex hormones than the stress hormone cortisol. The inference here is that youth is sexual, whereas age is stressed. Certainly cortisol is catabolic (breaking down muscle to convert to energy as a survival mechanism), whereas sex hormones are anabolic (testosterone builds muscle, estrogen enhances a nice figure and promotes beautiful skin).

Similarly, goji, upon analysis appears to be extremely rich in vitamins, carotenoids and minerals, as well as as containing flavonoids which can enhance the immune system in the blood to youthful levels.
